A group of seven accused members of German left-wing extremist organization stand trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist group along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the group was behind targeting locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the American move and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
